Best Cabin Rentals in Michigan for a Weekend Getaway (2026 Guide)

Big-group barnhouse alternatives to standard Michigan cabins — sleeps 16-30 with indoor pools, golf simulators, and Wiffleball stadiums for a real weekend getaway.

By Kyle Miklasz on 6/18/2026

At a Glance

The best cabin rentals in Michigan for a weekend getaway are large barnhouse properties in Big Rapids (sleeps 30, 4.8★) and Marcellus (sleeps 16, 4.9★) — both featuring indoor pools or golf simulators, hot tubs, and game rooms designed for full-group weekends rather than the typical 4-6 person cabin. Big Rapids sits 60 minutes north of Grand Rapids on the Muskegon River; Marcellus sits 30 minutes south of Kalamazoo near Swiss Valley and Lake Michigan wine country.

In This Guide

Michigan is one of the few states where you can hit a tubing river, a working winery, a ski slope, and a Lake Michigan beach without ever leaving the lower peninsula — and the weekend you build around all of that is only as good as where you sleep. Most "Michigan cabin" listings top out around six guests, which is fine for a couple but a non-starter when you're trying to get fifteen friends or three families under one roof. This guide is for the bigger trip. We'll cover what to do near two of our barnhouses in Big Rapids and Marcellus, what to look for in a Michigan weekend rental, and where to put everyone when the group is too big for a regular cabin. Our Michigan properties sleep 16 and 30 respectively — start there if you already know you need the space.

Why Michigan Wins for a Weekend Getaway

Michigan stacks up well against neighboring weekend states for one specific reason: it has more variety per square mile than almost anywhere in the Midwest. Drive 90 minutes in any direction from a centrally located rental and you'll find a different version of the trip — Lake Michigan beach towns, the Muskegon River corridor for tubing and fishing, sand dune country in Saugatuck and Silver Beach, wine country in Paw Paw and Baroda, ski hills like Swiss Valley in winter, and college towns like Ann Arbor, East Lansing, and Big Rapids for game-day weekends.

That matters when you're planning for a group. A weekend works best when half the group can go fishing or tubing while the other half goes wine tasting — and Michigan makes that geography easy. Both of our barnhouses are positioned for it: Big Rapids puts you on the Muskegon River with downtown five minutes away, and Marcellus puts you 30 minutes from Kalamazoo and an hour from the Lake Michigan dunes at Silver Beach.

What Makes a Michigan Rental Actually Worth It

"Best cabin rentals" is a loaded phrase. Most lists fall back on two filters — square footage and lake frontage — and skip the things that actually decide whether a weekend works. Here's what we look for when we build out a property:

Real capacity, not advertised capacity. A four-bedroom listing that "sleeps 14" because two couches turn into beds is going to sleep eight comfortably. For a weekend trip, count the actual beds and the actual bathrooms. A group of 20 wants at least three bathrooms, ideally more.

An indoor activity for bad weather. Michigan weekends get rained out. The trip is saved or lost on whether the rental has something to do indoors — pool, hot tub, game room, theater, basketball court, golf simulator. If everyone has to sit in the living room when it rains, the trip stalls.

A real kitchen. Twenty people don't eat out for every meal. Dishwasher, double oven, two refrigerators if you can find it, and counter space. Cooking together is half the point of a group rental.

Outdoor everything. Hot tub, fire pit, covered porch, yard with room to throw a ball. Michigan summer evenings are short — you want the outdoor space ready to use the moment the sun's out.

Both of our Michigan properties hit all four. The reason "barnhouse" beats "cabin" for group weekends is footprint — these are 4,800 to 5,000+ square foot buildings with the bedroom count and amenity stack to actually run a 20-person trip.

West Michigan: Big Rapids on the Muskegon River

Big Rapids is a college town on the Muskegon River, an hour north of Grand Rapids on US-131. Ferris State University anchors downtown, which means the food scene punches above its weight for a town of 7,700 people. The river runs through the middle of town with a half-dozen launch points for tubing, kayaking, and fishing within a 10-minute drive. The 4.7-star Hemlock Park sits right on the water with a fishing area and a playscape for the kids in the group.

J&J's River Run · Tubing & kayak rentals · 4.7★

The longest-running tube outfit on the Muskegon — locals call out the parking and the friendly staff in reviews. Drop-in tube floats run a few hours and they shuttle you back. Perfect for a Saturday afternoon group activity.

Roughly 10 minutes from the Big Rapids barnhouse

Schuberg's Bar & Grill · American grill · 4.6★ (1,774 reviews)

A downtown Big Rapids fixture since the 1890s. Honest American food, the martinis get name-checked in reviews, and they can absorb a group of fifteen without a wait. Walk in on a Friday before the band starts.

109 N Michigan Ave · downtown Big Rapids

Blue Cow · Seasonal fine dining · 4.3★

The reservation spot when one half of the group wants something nicer than burgers. Seasonal menu, wine shop attached, and reviews highlight the staff for genuinely knowing the menu. Book ahead for parties over six.

119 N Michigan Ave · downtown Big Rapids

Alamode Cafe · Breakfast · 4.6★ (892 reviews)

Saturday morning before tubing. Reviews call out Jamie by name and the food gets out fast — which matters when you've got twenty people standing on the sidewalk.

407 N State St · 8 minutes from the Big Rapids barnhouse

Katke Golf Course at Ferris State · Public golf course · 4.4★

A university course open to the public — surprisingly walkable greens and a fair price for the group golf round. Pair it with a stop at Clear Lake Golf Club (also 4.4★) 15 minutes east if you want to keep two foursomes moving.

1003 Perry Ave · on the Ferris State campus

A Perfect Big Rapids Saturday

Breakfast at Alamode at 9, downtown wander, tubing the Muskegon with J&J's at noon, back to the barnhouse for indoor pool + Wiffleball + hot tub at 4, dinner at Schuberg's at 7, then back to the barnhouse for arcade tournaments and the firepit until everyone falls asleep.

Southwest Michigan: Marcellus and the Lake Michigan Shore

Marcellus is a small town in Cass County, 30 minutes south of Kalamazoo and about an hour from the Lake Michigan dunes at Silver Beach. The draw here is geographic: you're a short drive from the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail (St. Julian, Round Barn, Lehman's), close enough to ski Swiss Valley in Jones in winter, and within reach of a real Lake Michigan beach day in summer.

St. Julian Winery & Distillery · Winery & tasting room · 4.7★ (595 reviews)

Michigan's oldest winery, in Paw Paw. The tasting flight is cheap, the staff actually knows what they're pouring, and the distillery side gives you something for the bourbon drinkers in the group. Reviews repeatedly mention how welcoming the room feels.

25 minutes from the Marcellus barnhouse

Round Barn Winery & Estate · Winery · 3.9★ (748 reviews)

Live music most weekends and a sprawling tasting room — a different vibe from the smaller wineries. Mixed reviews tilt around crowds at peak times, so go on a Friday rather than a Saturday afternoon if you want elbow room.

Baroda, MI · about 50 minutes west toward Lake Michigan

Silver Beach County Park · Lake Michigan beach · 4.7★ (7,021 reviews)

The Lake Michigan day-trip — full beach, pier, massive splash pad, ice cream and pizza right there. Reviews call out how much it packs into a small footprint. Bring towels and plan to stay until sunset over the lake.

St. Joseph, MI · about an hour west of Marcellus

The Rock at Big Fish Lake · American · 4.6★ (814 reviews)

The lake-side dinner spot you take the group to once during the trip. Pricier than the in-town options but reviews are consistent on food and service. Reservations recommended for groups over six.

14625 Loveridge St · 15 minutes from the Marcellus barnhouse

Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area · Ski resort · 4.4★ (624 reviews)

Winter weekend move. Three runs, two terrain parks, seven lifts — small operation, friendly staff, low-pressure for groups with mixed skill levels. Season runs roughly December through early March.

Jones, MI · 15 minutes from the Marcellus barnhouse

Amy's Fabulous Diner II · Diner · 4.6★ (468 reviews)

In-town Marcellus breakfast. The kind of diner where the waitress remembers your order halfway through Saturday. Get there before 9 if you don't want to wait.

591 W Main St · in downtown Marcellus

Best Time of Year to Plan the Trip

Late spring (April-May): Cheaper rates, smaller crowds, vineyards open, rivers running. Lake Michigan beach water is still cold but the dune trails are perfect.

Summer (June-August): Peak season for tubing the Muskegon, Lake Michigan beach days, and outdoor pools. Book the rental 4-6 weeks out for any weekend in July and August — both Michigan properties book heavy with family reunions and friends' weekends in summer.

Fall (September-October): The sleeper season. Color is excellent across both regions, wineries are at harvest, and the rental rates drop. Football Saturdays at Ferris State light up Big Rapids — drive 90 minutes south for an Ann Arbor or Spartan game if that's the trip.

Winter (December-March): Swiss Valley opens for skiing, the indoor pool at the Big Rapids barnhouse becomes the entire point of the weekend, and the holiday family-reunion bookings start mid-November. Hot tub weather is non-negotiable.

Where to Stay: The Two Standout Properties

Most Michigan rental listings stop at six guests. Both of our Michigan barnhouses are built for the bigger group — wedding parties, family reunions, bachelor or bachelorette weekends, multi-family trips, corporate retreats, and friends' groups that have outgrown the standard cabin. Every amenity is on-site, which matters when half the group wants to nap and half wants to keep going.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best cabin rental in Michigan for a large group weekend getaway?

For groups of 20 or more, the Big Rapids barnhouse is the strongest pick in Michigan — it sleeps 30 across 6 bedrooms and includes an indoor pool with a swim-up bar, an indoor basketball court, a backyard Wiffleball stadium, and a hot tub. For groups of 12-16, the Marcellus barnhouse is the highest-rated option (4.9★) with a golf simulator, mini golf course, basement bar, and arcade. Both sit on multi-acre lots so the outdoor space matches the size of the building.

Where in Michigan should you stay for a weekend getaway?

It depends on the trip. For tubing the river, fishing, downtown nights, and group golf, stay in Big Rapids — it's an hour north of Grand Rapids with the Muskegon River running through downtown. For wine country, Lake Michigan beach days, and winter skiing at Swiss Valley, stay in Marcellus or the broader southwest Michigan corridor near Kalamazoo. The two regions serve different weekend templates, so pick by what your group wants to do during the day.

How much does a weekend cabin rental in Michigan cost?

For a typical 4-6 person Michigan cabin, expect $200-$400 per night in peak season. For large-group barnhouse properties that sleep 16-30, nightly rates run $900-$1,800 — but on a per-person basis it usually works out to $40-$70 per guest per night, which is competitive with standard cabins once you factor in the indoor amenities and the fact that everyone is under one roof. Our Marcellus property starts at $925/night for up to 16+ guests.

What is there to do in Big Rapids, Michigan on a weekend?

The downtown food scene runs from Schuberg's (an 1890s American grill rated 4.6★) to Blue Cow (seasonal fine dining) to Alamode for breakfast. The Muskegon River is the main draw — J&J's River Run handles tubing rentals and shuttles. Hemlock Park sits on the water with a fishing area and playscape. Ferris State's Katke Golf Course is open to the public, and the Riverwalk Trailhead is a quiet morning walk. The Big Rapids barnhouse sits five to ten minutes from all of it.

Are Michigan cabin rentals open year-round?

Most of the large-group rentals in Michigan, including both of ours, operate year-round. Summer is the booking peak for river tubing and Lake Michigan beach trips. Fall is the sleeper season for fall color and football weekends. Winter brings ski trips to Swiss Valley near Marcellus and indoor-pool weekends at Big Rapids. The hot tub is the constant in every season.
