Most people drive past Mount Sterling. It sits right off I-64 about 40 minutes east of Lexington, and if you are pointed toward the Gorge you will see the exit and keep going.
That is a mistake, and it is also an opportunity. Mount Sterling is close enough to Red River Gorge and Cave Run Lake that you can hit both from the same bed, but it is far enough off the tourist track that you are not fighting for parking or paying gorge-town prices for dinner. Court Days, the Street Fair That Started in 1794
If you can plan your trip around one thing, plan it around this.
Court Days runs the third weekend of October and has run since 1794, missing only 2020. It started as the day the circuit judge came to town and people came in to trade while court was in session. The court part faded. The trading did not.
What it is now: downtown Mount Sterling closes to cars and around 1,500 vendors set up across the streets for the weekend. Tools, antiques, produce, livestock, knives, kettle corn, furniture, junk, and things you cannot categorize. It pulls well over a hundred thousand people into a town of about 7,500.
Two practical notes. First, go early on Saturday or go Friday, because by Saturday afternoon the crowd is shoulder to shoulder. Second, this is the one weekend of the year when lodging in Montgomery County disappears, so if Court Days is the plan, book months out.
Red River Gorge, 35 Minutes Southeast
Take the Mountain Parkway southeast and you are in the Gorge in a little over half an hour. It is a National Natural Landmark with more than a hundred sandstone arches, and it is one of the best rock climbing destinations in the country.
You do not need to be a climber to enjoy it.

A 1.3-mile loop off Rock Bridge Road leads to the falls and a sandstone shelf at the base of them. Rock Bridge, the arch that spans Swift Camp Creek, sits further around the same loop. Also worth knowing: Red River Jump Rock on KY-715 (4.8 stars) is exactly what it sounds like and is packed on hot weekends, and Broke Leg Falls (4.6 stars, 541 reviews) is a much shorter stop, though it is not in the Gorge at all — it sits on US-460 in Menifee County, about 30 minutes from town in a different direction, with an overlook right off the road and concrete steps down to the falls.
Cave Run Lake, 35 Minutes East
Head the other direction on US-60 and you reach Cave Run, an 8,270-acre lake inside Daniel Boone National Forest. Morehead, the town at its north end, bills itself as the muskie capital of the South, and it is the better call than the Gorge if your group wants a slow day rather than an active one.

Kentucky weather does what it wants, so it is worth knowing the indoor options before you need them.
Judy Drive In (4.6 stars, 399 reviews) on Maysville Road is the standout and it is not indoor at all. It is a proper drive-in running weekend double features, open May through September — so it is a summer plan, not a Court Days one. Year round, Tenth Frame Cinema (4.4 stars, 659 reviews) and Sterling Lanes (4.3 stars, 304 reviews) share a building at 930 Camargo Road, so a movie and bowling is a ten-second decision rather than a debate.
Where to Stay
The problem with a group trip to this part of Kentucky is usually beds. Gorge-area cabins sleep six, so a group of twenty ends up split across three or four rentals in different places, and the trip becomes a logistics exercise.
